The W116 chassis was introduced in 1972 as the base for the top-of-the-line Mercedes-Benz models, predecessors to the current S-Class cars. The quintessential version is the 450SEL 6.9 introduced in 1975, of which 7,380 units were built. The 6.9-liter dry-sump M100 V-8 engine, originally built for the iconic 600 limousines, provides incredible power, and the hydro-pneumatic suspension system with load-leveling control is appropriate to the luxurious appointments of the long-wheelbase version of the sedan. As with other W116 sedans, the 6.9 has restrained styling, generous interior space, a comfortable ride, and industry-leading active and passive safety features, including the first production ABS system co-developed with the Robert Bosch Company. Inside, a padded dashboard, deformable switches, and a padded steering wheel provide advanced crash protection.
